Google, The android developer , announced two plans to add new features i.e - On-body detection & Smart lock system - which specially uses accelerometer on to smartphones & judges that phone is in use or is in rest on a surface/table.
As per the technology website gizmodo.com, The phones will unlock if it is on the user's hand or into the pockets, device will also keep itself unlocked further. But if the phone is resting on the table or on other flat surfaces, then the phone will get automatically lock itself.
The smartphones can't judge, who is using the phone ?, so if any user hands over the phone to friend nearby, then it will follow same protocol as the user. However, this could be the security concern in this case, especially in case, if the device is stolen.
It is just convenience feature for user, and it can be optionally enabled to the users. This will let you to access your device easily, but it its a stable way to make more convenient for the customers.
This feature can seen on Nexus 4 with Android 5.0.1 and Nexus 6 with Android 5.1. But it's feature is limited to Android 5.0+ devices. When made available, then this can be accessed from Settings - Security - Smart Lock.
Google will slowly roll out the feature to all other Lollipop devices, but it's still limited to a handful of Nexus smart phones currently.
